Founderguard

COMPOSITION

Virginiamycin is a fibrous pellet formulation: 10 grams active ingredient per kilogram of pellet. N.B. Only licensed for use in equines.

PROPERTIES

Virginiamycin is an antibiotic that is active against lactobacilli and streptococcus. Equines following pasture or cereal overload develop an acid stomach that allows lactobacilli and streptococcus to become the dominant bacteria in a horse’s stomach. These bacteria, if they enter the bloodstream, can move to the feet where they act as triggers to enzymes that increase the risk of rotation or sinking of the pedal bone.

Virginiamycin also actively reduces lactic acid produced in the stomach during food fermentation.

USES

Founderguard can help reduce the risk of laminitis due to cereal or pasture overload; it is not a mechanism that prevents laminitis. If one is feeding Founderguard one should still follow a strict pasture and exercise management.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

There has been no trial work involving Founderguard and pregnant mares or breeding stallions, it is therefore advisable not to feed Founderguard to the above.

DOSAGE

Founderguard should be fed at a rate of 5 grams per 100 kilograms of horse.

When feeding Founderguard for the first time, or after a period of not feeding, changes in diet should be avoided for the first week. You may notice a slight decrease in appetite and a drier than normal faeces, this can be overcome by adding a wet bran mash to the diet once daily.

These symptoms can be avoided in most cases by introducing the Founderguard at ½ dose for the first week.

STORAGE

Founderguard should be stored in a plastic container that is kept in dry conditions and away from vermin. It should be stored in rooms less than 30oC and above freezing.

LAMINITIS

Although any horse or pony of any age, breed or sex can develop laminitis at any time of year.

Should you wish to discuss any of these issues in more detail, please consult your veterinary surgeon.
