All horses and ponies require their teeth to be rasped at regular intervals because the teeth continually grow throughout their life. Young horses whose teeth erupt faster will require rasping every six to eight months, as will any horse with a dental abnormality. Older horses with normal dental conformation will generally require a dental check, plus possibly rasping every year. Horses with mouth conformation problems and some geriatric horses may need care more often, especially if they have lost some teeth.
We are very happy to inspect and rasp your horse’s teeth, but may advise referral to an experienced equine dentist if more than basic work is required.
Equine dentistry is becoming highly specialised and rapid advances in techniques available means much more can be done to ensure your horse is comfortable in his mouth. This can vastly improve his general well being, nutrition, behaviour and prevent tension areas in the neck and rest of the body.
Horses will need to be sedated by a vet for teeth extraction or where complicated dentistry is required.
We work closely with some very experienced equine dental technicians. Contact details can be obtained from the surgery.
