Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease

RVHD2

Rabbit Health

We have been advising and vaccinating rabbits against classic VHD and myxomatosis as a combined yearly vaccine for many years.

Recently a new virus form known as RVHD2 has emerged.

It causes sudden death or severe illness by affecting the rabbits liver. It has spread to the UK after first being discovered in France in 2010. It is spread by biting insects and by contaminated bedding or feed.

There is now a vaccine available against RVHD2 called Filavac.

We would strongly advise you arrange to have your rabbit vaccinated with Filavac every six months as we must now consider ourselves in a high risk area. In the last month we have confirmed the presence of the disease, by post mortem, in over four rabbits belonging to our clients.
